HAIR’s History
HAIR’s roots started growing back in March of 1969 when founder Charles Tuozzoli opened its doors for the first time. The origin of HAIR’s name comes from the infamous age of Aquarius Broadway play Hair. The same energy, liveliness, and creativity that pulsed through the musical at the time of its’ airing can still be felt throughout the salon today.
Charles was not only a world-class hairstylist he was also an activist. He left his lasting mark on the beauty industry and the lives of men all over the state in 1974. Back then there was a polarizing differentiation between a salon and a barbershop, it is was illegal for men to have their hair cut in a salon.
The combination of Charles' passion for hair and the blatant need from the public lead Charles to cut men’s hair on the second floor of the salon in secrecy. As time went on Charles chose to act rather than stay in the shadows! He sued the state of Connecticut to change the law and allow men and women alike to decide where they wanted to get their hair done regardless of gender.
And… He won!! This legal victory changed the landscape of the beauty industry in Connecticut forever. As Charles will proudly state to this day, "The reason why men can go into salons now is because of me!"
The drive to see this change in his industry was more than just a business decision for Charles. At his core, he believes that a haircut is far more than a superficial change. As a stylist you become a part of your client’s inner life, you spend time with them throughout their many stages of life and all the monumental moments. After seeing some of his clients for over 50 years he can proudly say those relationships he first made with his clients back in 1969 have transformed into lifelong and truly treasured friendships.
Charles' care extends far beyond his clients. His team members if not already, become family. At HAIR family is more than just genetics. Every single member of the HAIR team becomes a part of the HAIR family once they walk through those doors. Charles shows his love for his employees through the greatest gifts he has to offer, knowledge and education. After 50+ years in the industry and being a member of the prestigious Intercoiffure professional association for 40+ years, Charles provides nuggets of knowledge with every model class he teaches and the legacy of the training program.
At HAIR Charles has ensured that as the times and styles change, his stylists’ skills will always adapt and grow with them while remaining true to that original Age of Aquarius energy and always staying trendy!
